Naples, 28th December 2018 – Last 21st December, while the multipurpose ro-ro vessel Grande Tema, operated by the Grimaldi Group, was positioned in the Thames estuary and proceeding towards the Port of Tilbury (UK), four stowaways, found onboard a few days earlier, were the protagonists of violent behaviour, threatening the crew and demanding the vessel to navigate closer to the shore, in order to disembark.

Thanks to the self-control and professionalism of the Master and the rest of the crew members, the Grande Tema remained under the crew’s full control during the 14-hour violent behaviour of the four stowaways. The incident ended with the intervention of a Special Boat Service unit which boarded the ship at 11:00 pm of the same day and took control of the stowaways, without any bloodshed.

The Grimaldi Group’s top management wishes to express its thanks and praise to all bodies involved, whose professionalism and sense of duty resulted in a positive conclusion of the event.

Following the incident on the Grande Tema, Gianluca Grimaldi, President of the Grimaldi Group, commented: “We wish to express our upmost appreciation and highest praise to all Maritime and law enforcement services involved for the successful outcome of the entire operation. Thanks to the coordination of the Essex Police and the participation of the Maritime Coastguard Agency, the Dover Coastguard and the Port of London Authority, the vessel was safely rescued with no report of injuries”.

“We are especially grateful to the Special Boat Service unit whose prompt intervention onboard the Grande Tema was crucial in order to put an end to the stowaways’ violence, as well as rescue all our crew”.

“We would finally like to thank the Master Antonio Raggi and all the other crew members of the Grande Tema for the great professionalism and composure shown during the incident”, concluded Gianluca Grimaldi.”
