Eugenio Grimaldi on Port of Catania: “We will continue to increase our investments here”

The Grimaldi Group is set to further expand its investments in the Port of Catania. Already the Sicilian port’s leading operator for many years and one of the world’s foremost shipowners in the short sea shipping sector, the Group reaffirmed its commitment on 26 June during a visit by Executive Manager Eugenio Grimaldi to the headquarters of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Sicily Sea, where he was welcomed by the Authority’s President, Francesco Di Sarcina.

“It was a highly productive and much-appreciated meeting, during which we discussed the future development of the port, which greatly benefits from the presence of a company of this calibre,” said Mr Di Sarcina. “Our discussions focused on sustainability, future growth opportunities and, above all, integrated logistics, in light of the many projects currently underway that will help shape the port’s future. I also greatly appreciated the valuable insights shared by Mr Grimaldi. His extensive experience as a prominent shipping operator will support the Port Authority in further improving the services and facilities we provide to businesses operating within the port, bringing them increasingly into line with the highest international standards.”

Eugenio Grimaldi expressed his strong support for the strategic direction being pursued by the Port Authority: “We intend to increase our investment in the Port of Catania by further strengthening both the services we already provide and our overall operations. Catania is a strategically important port in the Mediterranean, and we’re committed to working closely with the Port Authority to expand our activities, enhance the efficiency of existing operations and support the implementation of the major development projects currently underway.”

Investment in port infrastructure is part of a broader strategy that includes the expansion and modernization of the fleet deployed on the Group’s short sea shipping network. These services are now operated by Grimaldi’s ECO-class, which are among the world’s most technologically advanced ro-ro ships. With capacity for more than 500 trailers, each of these vessels incorporates cutting-edge environmental technologies that significantly reduce CO₂ emissions compared with the previous generation of ships.

One of their most notable features is the ability to operate with zero emissions while docked in port. Thanks to state-of-the-art battery technology, onboard services can continue running without the need to use auxiliary engines. This further reinforces the Group’s commitment to ensuring that growth in maritime traffic and service quality goes hand in hand with environmental sustainability.
