Shaping the future of Maltese shipping

The long-standing partnership between the Grimaldi Group company Malta Motorways of the Sea (MMOS) and leading maritime training institution Maritime MT reached another important milestone on 4 June, with the Graduation Day for the latest class of Officer Cadets.

The event celebrated the cadets' successful completion of their training program and highlighted the results of the Memorandum of Understanding between MMOS and Maritime MT, through which the former provides onboard training opportunities for Maltese cadets. The initiative contributes to developing the next generation of qualified Officers for both the Maltese and international shipping industries.

Rising stars of the navigational watch

The centrepiece of the day was the graduation ceremony for a new cohort of local maritime professionals. Crucially, five of the newly graduated Officers completed their rigorous sea-time placements on board members of the specialized Malta Motorways of the Sea fleet. This hands-on training proved foundational, giving them invaluable experience navigating complex shipping routes and providing mentorship under the guidance of veteran MMOS captains.

Among this elite group of graduates, Officer Julian Tagliaferro was singled out for his exceptional performance. Newly certified as an Officer of the Navigational Watch, he was presented with the Emerging Leader Award by MMOS Managing Director Paolo Satariano.

"Officer Tagliaferro represents the exact standard of excellence we seek to cultivate within the Grimaldi Group," Satariano noted during his address. "Seeing him and his four peers successfully transform from eager cadets into fully certified Deck Officers right here on our own vessels demonstrates that our investment in Maltese youth is paying massive dividends."

A partnership built on training and innovation

To symbolize the bonds between MMOS and the training academy, Satariano presented a beautifully crafted, detailed model of the Eco Malta to Maritime MT CEO Pauline Micallef, as a perfect emblem of their enduring partnership. As one of the flagship vessels of the Grimaldi Green 5^th Generation (GG5G) hybrid ro-ro fleet, in 2022 the Eco Malta was christened in the Grand Harbour (port of Valletta) by her godmother, Malta’s then First Lady, Miriam Vella. The gift represented MMOS and Maritime MT’s shared commitment to preparing future seafarers for an increasingly sustainable and technologically advanced shipping industry.

Building on the clear success of the current graduating Deck Officer class, MMOS used the event to announce the major strategic expansion of its maritime training pathways. While deck cadet programs will continue to receive strong backing, the focus will now be firmly placed also on engine cadet sea-time placements.

With modern environmental regulations pushing ships to adopt cutting-edge exhaust cleaning systems and alternative hybrid propulsion, the role of the Engine Officer has fundamentally changed.

To address these evolving industry demands head-on, MMOS is redefining its training strategy by placing engine cadets directly aboard state-of-the-art hybrid vessels powered by advanced alternative fuels. Under this new framework, sea-time placements are restructured to prioritize high-tech mentorship, shifting the focus from routine maintenance to active troubleshooting of complex automated systems under the direct guidance of senior Chief Engineers.

By heavily investing in this onboard training, the Grimaldi Group secures a robust career pipeline, guaranteeing a steady stream of highly skilled young Maltese Engine Officers ready to step straight out of Maritime MT and confidently command the world's most technologically advanced, eco-friendly fleet.

Through the active execution of the current MoU, Malta Motorways of the Sea and Maritime MT are not merely keeping pace with industry shifts, they are proactively engineering the standard for the next generation of seafarers.
