Grimaldi transports equipment for Uruguay’s first integrated green hydrogen project
The Grimaldi Group has successfully completed
the shipment of critical cargo for the Kahirós Project, Uruguay’s first
industrial-scale green hydrogen pilot plant, marking another important step in
supporting the global energy transition and sustainable logistics.
The
cargo, coordinated end-to-end by Kuehne+Nagel as the logistics partner for the
project, consisted of
ten 40-foot mafi trailers loaded with wooden cases containing part of the plant
equipment. The shipment departed from Genoa on 4 February and arrived in
Montevideo on 7 April, using Grimaldi’s maritime transport service via Lagos
and Paranaguá.
The Kahirós Project is a pioneering initiative
that will play a strategic role in Uruguay’s decarbonization plans. The
hydrogen plant will be installed in Fray Bentos, approximately 300 kilometres
from Montevideo, near the operations of Fraylog, a Uruguayan company
specialized in wood supply chain services and transport solutions. Designed to
support sustainable heavy transport within the forestry supply chain, it will
produce 77 tons of green hydrogen annually using energy generated by a 4.8 MW
photovoltaic facility.
The hydrogen generated will power Hyundai
heavy-duty trucks used for timber transportation, replacing fossil fuels and
contributing to a significant reduction in emissions. It is estimated that the project,
which is expected to be operational by the end of this year, will enable an
annual reduction of around 870 tons of CO2 emissions.
Developed as an investment by Grupo Santander
and carried out by a consortium formed by Ventus, Fraylog, and Hyundai Fidocar,
the Kahirós Project represents an important milestone in Uruguay’s energy
transition. In 2025, the country further strengthened its global leadership in
renewable energy, with 98% of its electricity generation coming from renewable
sources.
Through this shipment, Grimaldi Group has once again confirmed its commitment to supporting innovative and sustainable industrial projects worldwide, leveraging its integrated logistics and ro-ro transport expertise to move complex cargo across continents safely and reliably.
