Grande Shanghai wins the Shippax RoRo Award 2026
A new international honour for the Grimaldi
Group: its innovative Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) Grande Shanghai has
won the prestigious Shippax RoRo Award 2026. The award was presented during the Shippax Ferry Conference
2026, held on board GNV’s Rhapsody from 5 to 7 May.
Launched in 1996, the Shippax Awards recognize
innovative solutions in newly delivered ro-pax ferries, ro-ro vessels and
high-speed ferries. The jury evaluates each candidate through technical
assessments, onboard visits and in-depth research.
The Grande Shanghai was designed in
collaboration with Knud E. Hansen and built by China Merchants Heavy Industries
Jiangsu. The award was received jointly by the Grimaldi Group, the Danish naval
architect and the shipyard, acknowledging the successful collaboration behind
the development of this vessel.
As the first of a series of ten next-generation
vessels, the Grande Shanghai combines extraordinary transport capacity
with advanced sustainable technologies. As highlighted by the Shippax jury, the
vessel represents “a milestone in terms of Pure Car & Truck Carrier design
standards, reducing fuel consumption per transported CEU by up to 50 percent
through the combination of enormous capacity with various sustainable
technologies, including a battery pack, shore power connection and a
silicon-based hull coating to reduce resistance. Moreover, her
ammonia-readiness enables the Grande Shanghai to apply even more
sustainable fuel solutions once they become available during her lifespan.”
Receiving this prestigious recognition further
confirms the Grimaldi Group’s commitment to innovation and sustainability,
supporting the transition towards more efficient and environmentally
responsible maritime transport.
