Concrete commitment to sustainability: Trasmed receives Leadership Award

Trasmed, the Grimaldi Group’s Spanish shipping company, has won the Leadership Prize for its innovative and sustainable ferry services at the first edition of the Premios Activos Empresariales. The awards were organized by the Spanish publishing group Prensa Ibérica and conferred at a ceremony held in Madrid on 30 October.
This accolade is acknowledgement of Trasmed’s commitment to a more efficient, innovative and environmentally friendly model of maritime transport, as well as its contribution to the ecological transition of the Spanish maritime sector.

The prize was collected by Trasmed CEO Ettore Morace, who emphasized the company’s genuine dedication to a cleaner, more responsible maritime mobility model aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. “At Trasmed, sustainability is not a slogan, but a measurable and concrete strategy that is part of our DNA and of the Grimaldi Group’s global vision,” he stated.

In recent years, Trasmed has pursued a sustainability plan with tangible measures concerning energy efficiency, technological innovation and the progressive reduction of emissions across all its activities. In the last fiscal year alone, the company managed to cut its CO2-equivalent emissions by 16,600 tonnes compared with 2023, and it expects to achieve an additional reduction of 15,700 tonnes in 2025—a positive environmental impact comparable to taking more than 7,000 vehicles off the road each year.

Among the main initiatives implemented are an 11% reduction in the fleet’s average speed, route optimization—resulting in 12% fewer miles sailed without affecting cargo capacity—and technical improvements to vessels, such as propeller cleaning and the use of silicone-based coatings that reduce drag and therefore fuel consumption.

Another significant milestone is the connection of vessels to the recently inaugurated Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at the Grimaldi terminal in Barcelona. Since its activation in March 2025, the ship Ciudad de Palma has used more than 406 MWh of renewable electrical energy, eliminating emissions and reducing noise pollution in the urban area during port stays.

At the Port of Barcelona, the Grimaldi Group has also invested in the installation of a photovoltaic plant at the Poniente Dock terminal, with more than 1,700 solar panels designed to cover most of the facility’s energy needs. Complementing this initiative was a partnership with the technology company PureTech, which involved applying a depurative coating at the San Bertrán Dock capable of absorbing and transforming pollutants such as CO2 and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into environmentally harmless compounds.

Thanks to retrofit operations, all Trasmed vessels will soon be ready to connect to the OPS system not only in Barcelona but in every port equipped with the necessary infrastructure.

Trasmed is also actively participating in the Lean & Green program, for which it expects to obtain its first star for reducing CO2 emissions by 20% by 2026, continuing its progress toward new goals in environmental efficiency and decarbonization.

As Ettore Morace emphasized, all these measures demonstrate that leadership is measured by actions. “At Trasmed, we believe that technological innovation and environmental sustainability are not incompatible with competitiveness and operational excellence; on the contrary, they represent the best guarantee for the future,” he said.

The Leadership Prize is further recognition of Trasmed’s position among the shipping companies most committed to the ecological transition of maritime transport in Europe, strengthening the Grimaldi Group’s status as a global leader in innovation, energy efficiency and sustainability within the port and logistics sector.
