ACL: Canada’s Ports bestow Medal of Merit on Fritz King

Fritz King, retired Managing Director of Atlantic Container Line (ACL) Canada, has been awarded the ACPA Medal of Merit, one of the highest honors in Canada’s port and shipping industry. Presented at the Association of Canadian Port Authorities’ (ACPA) annual conference in Halifax, the award recognizes King’s extraordinary 53-year career and his enduring impact on Canada’s maritime community.

For ACL and our customers in North America and Europe, Fritz has always been “Mr. Canada,” explained Andrew J. Abbott, President and CEO of ACL, a Grimaldi Group company. “He has always personified the very best attributes of this wonderful country. Fritz is the reason why Halifax is ACL’s first arrival port and last departure port in North America. He is an icon of Canadian shipping – always professional, honest, and loyal to everyone he has ever worked with. After 48 years of fun working together, I am blessed to have Fritz as one of my dearest friends.uploaded picture

Born and raised in Nova Scotia, King dedicated his entire career to ACL, holding positions across Canada before serving ACL Canada for more than 20 years from Halifax. He was a founding member of the Halifax Employers Association and Chairman of that Board for 14 years. Fritz also spent 10 years on the ILA (International Longshoremen's Association) Pension and Welfare Board and the Audit Committee. He was appointed by the province to sit on the Canadian Coast Guard’s National Marine Advisory Board and acted as Industry Chairman for the Maritime Provinces Maritime Seacoast Advisory Board for several years. Fritz served 19 years on the Shipping Federation of Canada’s National Board.

In nominating King, the Halifax Port Authority praised his extensive knowledge of the marine transportation, his problem-solving abilities, and his unwavering, inspiring leadership. “Fritz King’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Halifax’s marine industry,” said Fulvio Fracassi, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority. “For decades, his leadership, knowledge, and tireless commitment have strengthened the shipping industry across Canada and beyond. His contributions will inspire generations to come.

I am humbled by this recognition,” commented Fritz King. “My career with ACL has been a lifelong journey—one filled with challenges, opportunities, and, most importantly, lasting friendships. Halifax has been at the heart of that journey, and I am proud to have contributed to the strength of Canada’s maritime industry. I thank ACPA for this truly meaningful award.

Since its inception in 1975, the ACPA Medal of Merit has celebrated individuals whose dedication and vision leave a lasting mark on Canada’s ports and shipping. This year, Fritz King’s name was added to that distinguished legacy.
