Grimaldi transforms Igoumenitsa: the revamping of T3 Terminal
Since 2023,
following its acquisition by the Grimaldi Group, a new era has begun for the
Port of Igoumenitsa — one marked by investments focused on modernity,
efficiency and environmental sustainability. Now it’s the turn of T3 Passenger
Terminal to have a makeover, with a project that is set to turn it into an
iconic space where landscape, functionality and sustainability come together.
Work began
on 1 August and is due for completion by the end of September. The renovation
will completely transform the terminal’s outdoor areas. Mediterranean
vegetation, curved lines, functional pathways and a central fountain will turn
the facility into a hub connecting the port with the city, making it more
accessible, usable and welcoming.
The right-hand
side of the terminal will serve the two million passengers who travel each year
to and from Corfu and other Ionian islands, while the left-hand side will house
the cruise terminal, including a dedicated Extra-Schengen area for passengers
arriving from non-EU countries.
Many other
projects are helping to make the Port of Igoumenitsa increasingly green and
cutting-edge. Completed initiatives include the installation of a 1.5 MWp
photovoltaic system, producing
3 million kWh per year and avoiding more than 60,000 tonnes of CO2
emissions, and LED
relamping, which provides annual energy savings of over 50% for lighting.
Ongoing developments include the installation of charging stations for electric
vehicles and an On Shore Power Supply (cold ironing) system to supply ships
with shoreside electrical power.
More
improvements are on the way as well: a new shuttle bus for passenger transport
within the port, replacement of drainage channels, and additional upgrades
aimed at improving safety and energy efficiency.
