Grimaldi supports the Food for Gaza initiative
Solidarity is made of concrete actions, not
just words. One such action carried out by the Grimaldi Group was the free
transport of a mobile scanner offered by the Gioia Tauro Port Authority that
will be of extreme importance for Gaza, the Palestinian territory which has
been the epicentre of clashes for nine months now, with tens of thousands of
civilian casualties. The scanner was transported on board the vessel Grande
Europa from Gioia Tauro (Italy) to Limassol (Cyprus): this X-ray inspection
device can check all types of goods and will allow the inspection of food aid
for Gaza so as to prevent the risk of package tampering.
The scanner left Gioia Tauro on 30 June and
arrived in Limassol on 4 July, after being delivered to the Italian Customs and
Monopolies Agency and to the Civil Protection Department in the Calabrian port,
as part of the Italian Government's humanitarian initiative "Food for
Gaza” in support of the Palestinian civilian population in the Strip.
“With this operation we’ve given a further
signal of the Italian Government’s concrete commitment to deal with the
humanitarian crisis and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population
in Gaza,” commented Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign
Affairs & International Cooperation Antonio Tajani. “Thanks
to the mobile scanner we’ll facilitate checks on humanitarian products that
will be sent through the 'maritime corridor' from Cyprus to Gaza.”
“I also thank the shipping company Grimaldi Lines, an important Italian player in the maritime industry, which offered the free transport of the scanner to Cyprus: this also shows how the Food for Gaza initiative is made possible by the joint commitment of institutions, associations and private individuals,” Mr Tajani concluded. From Cyprus, once checked according to security standards agreed with Israel, the humanitarian aid will be forwarded to Gaza, its final destination.
